Through the progression of cutting-edge emerging technologies using extended reality (XR), opportunities arise for the realization of more authentic and immersive forms of group meetings (3D), such that they can become an equivalent (or even better) alternative to virtual 2D workplace meetings. In my talk, I describe a novel course design for students that utilizes the Metaverse as a learning and research environment to explore immersive group meetings using virtual reality (VR) headsets. I am going to present our preliminary findings on meeting outcomes and individual VR experiences (i.e., group interaction characteristics, avatar perception, simulator sickness, and task load). Following the talk, you are cordially invited to discuss about opportunities and challenges of the Metaverse as a platform for enabling immersive learning scenarios and conducting workplace meetings in the future.
